Calypso is a very promising new cultivar selected from Ebony Cowpea lines. This cultivar exhibits heavy foliation and strong semi erect growth. It tends towards a prostrate growth habit as the plant ages but, unlike the thick ropey characteristics of Ebony, this cultivar remains soft and subtle with finer vines throughout the vegetative stage. These very useful traits are also accompanied by an excellent drought tolerance and disease resistance to stem rot. Early observations indicate that Calypso is more stable under adverse conditions. I.e Calypso seems to fair better under wetter conditions than Ebony and will perform better than Black Stallion Cowpea under dry conditions. More trial work is needed to confirm these observations.
Calypso is a white flowering cowpea with chocolate brown seeds. All indications so far point to an excellent seed producer. Calypso will flower 50-60 days from planting dependant on weather conditions and planting times.

527 Rongai is the latest in Forage Lab Lab cultivars. Results from our trial crop in Far North Queensland have been inspiring. This variety not only out-performed the traditional Rongai variety, it did so with the odds stacked against it. An unirrigated paddock of 527 Rongai was planted next to an irrigated paddock of the old Rongai variety. The results speak for themselves. Not only was the unirrigated 527 Rongai 20-30cm taller, it was significantly thicker and displayed a very appealing uniformity across the entire paddock.
527 Rongai is a white flowering Lab Lab and trial results indicate that it flowers up to 1 week earlier than the traditional Rongai dependant on weather conditions and planting times.
